So a lot has happened in the world of Ark since the last time I said a few words on it, and for the most part, my opinion is much the same-just a little bit less enthusiastically phrased nowadays. Now, I know, like REALLY I KNOW, that I bought a game that's in Alpha testing. I know there will be issues with that. I did, however, assume that Beta was right around the corner. I didn't realize that Beta was not on the horizon but paid DLC was. Okay, I love the monthly-ish new dino additions and the minor tweaks to fix things here and there. I LOVED how well everything was running... until Scorched Earth released. For the first couple weeks, our server had a hard time keeping up. The cake though, was when I crashed the server (not just MY game, but the server) when I accidentally flew over a baby beaver. Nice. A bunch of the issues were addressed in a fairly timely manner, which was cool. Now we are on to memory leak issues. I can only play for a couple hours before the game literally incapacitates my rig. My expensive, bought to the highest specs of Guild Wars 2, new video card upgraded rig. Last night, while playing for roughly three hours, my game fatal errored twice. Different errors each time. It's getting harder to look past the issues and more appealing to wait til the game gets to Beta status.
All that said, the game is still fun besides the frustrations. I mean, when the game glitches out and that drake you killed flops down a mountain, vanishes, then reappears as a new mountain island- its butt touching the no fly zone in the sky and the rest of it buried deep in the ocean abyss, you can't help but giggle. Even if you did just lose a trophy. Mods are where it's at in this game. There's mods for nearly anything you could ever want. Steampunk armor. Game of Thrones attire. Neat hair. Aliens and Predators wandering about, picking fights with dinosaurs. Metal Giganotosaurus. Last night I spent a good hour rearranging the furniture/crafting stations on my first floor (LOVE the mods that let you pick items back up instead of destroying them!).
The game has serious potential. I just hate to see it fizzle out as people get sick of all the bugs. We haven't bought into the DLC yet. We got the original during a really good Steam sale so the odds I would pay more for a DLC map than I did the whole game itself are slim to none. Especially when we aren't playing on an "Official" server and can add all the mods we want! For now, I still want to get on and play with dinosaurs, but if the error messages keep popping up I may go back to Minecraft for awhile.
